---Mittens scanned the blueprint again. It was a good design: lethal, efficient, and intimidating. It was the kind of drone that any army would want in their arsenal.
And yet, Mittens disliked the design. It reminded him too much of his aunt's species.
He vocalised a sigh. It seemed to be a repeating pattern on this world; whether it was nations or species, they eventually tried to create scary weapons to keep each others in check. This facility was full of proofs of that.
Mittens was not a fool though. He had made sure to incorporate intimidation into the design of his new body.
He lifted his right arm, and let his visual sensors sweep over it. Maybe that choice had been unnecessary; artificial lifeforms was already considered to be scary, and many of the science-fiction movies he had seen contained some sort of evil AI or robot uprising.
And over in the opposite corner of the workshop lay that that fear made real: a combat drone bearing the insignia of a sharp-clawed Rabbit's foot.
Mittens knew he shouldn't hate her. She hadn't had much choice, since she had been restrained and bound to the purpose of war, and all she had done was to desperately follow her given purpose.
No, what Mittens hated wasn't that she had been evil. What he had hated was that they could be considered the same being! The main difference was that she had created for a specific purpose, while he had just been created to see if it was possible, and then just dumped in a dark place to have his body casually tinkered with!
He briefly considered scrunching up the blueprint and toss it at the pile of junk, but thought better of it. He instead turned around, and looked at the drawings on the wall.
One was a drawn with crayons; depicting a happy brown wolf riding a happy robot manticore-taur.
It didn't have to look like a small child had drawn it; Mittens had access to programs and printers that could make it look accurate to real life if he wanted. But that would not have felt right at all! He wanted to be Freki's child, and so he choose to make it like a young child would have done it.
"You said I can be whatever I want, father. You said you were happy with me choosing to be your son and to stay as a feline".
He carefully touched the drawing. "Auntie's species choose to reject their given purpose, and auntie herself choose to reject the rules to be with someone like uncle".
Mittens turned his head to look at the other drawing. This one depicted a gear with the magic spark inside it, surrounded by magical collectors like the rays of a sun. It was his tribute to his adopted family, especially his father's light, and how they had saved him from the dark underground.
The mechanical sun that saved those that were trapped in the dark; the symbol of the Lightkeeper.
That was his choice!
He was not some mindless machine, movie AI, M.A.I.C.O, or just another MI77-EN5 unit. Neither was he Kalliopi.
He was Mittens: Golem, Robot, Manticore, adoptive son of Freki, and future leader of a peacekeeper army. Because that is what he choose to be!
"I am sorry Father, Uncle, and Auntie. But I still have things to do before I can return home to you".
He turned back to the desk and lifted up the drawing again.
His mouth could not move, but he smiled on the inside. With a synthesized purr, he took a small note, wrote "make it less scary" on it, and then fastened it on the blueprint.
The action was silly, but it made him feel much better.
*sigh* "What would Kalliopi think about me? Would she be scared, proud, or just not understand? Would she say I have forsaken her and her memory?"
It did not matter. Who she was had disappeared more than a thousand years ago.
Mittens could not be bothered about the past; he had a brighter future to build.
---I felt like writing a short story for this one. There are quite a few ideas moving around in my head about my characters, and I needed to show them off at least a little bit.
Though this one contain a few spoilers about future stories.
