A new commission for my buddy A-Sleepy-Kai on DeviantArt, who wanted to see his sporty cutie Jolteon girl in a tennis outfit- and I wanted to use it as an opportunity to practice a new shading style based on the works of artist Ben Bates, who did a lot of really cool brush-like shading on his covers for Archie Sonic. The background was a pretty short rush job, but I really like how the mix of colored linework (with a black line for the general outline of the character) mixed with the brush I used for shading here. I used to use a soft-edged brush in shading that produced a more silky or metallic sort of texture, but for this one I used a harder-edged brush at low opacity, and just used several rapid short strokes to produce a look I think more resembles a paintbrush. It might still need some practice, but I'm very happy with the results! Let me know what you think of it compared to my other shading stuff, too~
