____________________________Even before Prince Borgon was born, the princedom had suffered a sudden and unfortunate loss.
The dragon that Valmeridia had chosen as its ruler, and who had reigned over those lands for several seasons,
bringing prosperity and riches to his subjects, had unexpectedly died.
Not a natural death, that was certain, as his dragon origins guaranteed him several more years to live.
So, what was to be done? Finding the culprit was a top priority, but first the vacant throne had to be filled.
Valmeridia wasn't a land of natural origin; the first dragons had infused it with their majestic life force to make it flourish and pristine.
Of them, however, aside from the legends associated with their quests, only the eternal flame remained.
A symbol of life and hope for Valmeridia, it burned in a brazier placed within the Verbena castle,
and its perpetual fire seemed destined to never die, as if its energy itself were inexhaustible.
But like a hearth left to burn unchecked, the sacred flame needed a bearer to ensure that its beneficial effects were channeled to those lands.
And without a ruler to govern it, it could not guarantee the lands its magic.
Valmeridia began to die, and although the subjects could still enjoy the effects of nature and the normal flow of the seasons,
rivers, Woods and hills certainly wouldn't be able to handle all the creatures that had moved there over time.
Some subjects gave in to temptation and left the princedoom, seeking more prosperous lands;
others resisted, gritting their teeth, for Valmeridia was not only the place governed by their ruler, but their very home and existence.
What to do, then? There were no dragons left, and mere mortals could't claim to be worthy of the role of ruler.
This was for purely aristocratic reasons, as well as for more practical ones: the flame channeled its power by draining the life energy of the crown bearer.
Not a big problem for vital creatures like dragons, but for a common inhabitant of the prince, it could be considered too much.
Fortunately, there was still hope.
The prince was dead, but his most trusted subjects were still there.
One in particular, a graceful and wise vestal doe, had come forward a few weeks after his death.
No one knew much about her past, but everyone knew her as the guardian of the sacred flame,
expertly trained to ensure that Valmeridia's fire remained protected and alive throughout the seasons.
She therefore seemed best suited to harness its power, even if only for a short time.
And so, Rosaspina della Marea became the Princess Regent.
The crown itself seemed to choose her, almost as if even that magical artifact understood the importance of that choice.
With eyes filled with tears for the ultimate sacrifice, but also with happiness for the renewed accord between the ancestral forces
of the ancient dragons and the princedom of Valmeridia, all the remaining subjects joyfully welcomed their new sovereign.
When Valmeridia had most needed a leader, she had graciously answered the call.
Even knowing she was physically unable to do so for much, but only for the good of everyone.
In the seasons to come, even after her ing, the creatures of the princedom would often her,
year after year, as one of the wisest and most merciful rulers to ever sit on the throne of castle della Verbena.
And in the great ceremonies honoring the creation of the magical italian princedom,
to this day there is no shortage of odes in honour of the Princess Regent~____________________________

Anyway, here's something dedicated to the princess who sat on the throne of Valmeridia
when Borgon was still a child destined to become the future ruler ^^
