“He was a flamboyant man who smoked big cigars, drove big black Cadillacs, and did things like buy tickets to a Broadway play for us cousins. But he didn't buy two or three or even four seats, he bought a whole row!”
Giuseppe Profaci was born in 1897 in Villabate, Sicily. In the 1920s, he came to New York City, where he became a bootlegger and started an olive oil import business. The gangs gave him power in Brooklyn, even though Profaci was inexperienced. When the Castellammarese War tore through the streets, Profaci remained neutral. He later became the boss of the new Profaci Family, which would later become the Colombo Family. Old Man Profaci’s men complained about his greed. Each month, they paid him a $25 fine, which was a custom he learned from Sicily. When Profaci sparred with the Gallo brothers, other bosses begged him to resign. Old Man Profaci ed away in 1962.
