“So, how did you find out about this place?” asked Skylar as he walked alongside his friend. “Seems kinda random to me, honestly,”
Rob shrugged. “Just did some poking around online,” he replied. “Was looking for some trails we could explore together, and this was the one that looked the most interesting to me.” He grinned. “I mean, a trail that runs along a cliffside? That sounds pretty cool, right?”
“Yeah, I guess so,” replied Skylar. “It certainly beats sitting around the house doing nothing, at any rate.” He turned to Rob and frowned. “Why are you dressed like that, anyway?”
“Like what?” asked Rob. He looked down at his outfit: Black pants beneath a black button-down shirt, a blue tie hanging down from his neck. “What are you talking about?” he asked, adjusting his hat above his long hair. “This is how I always dress.”
“Yeah, but it’s not exactly optimal hiking gear, is it?” said Skylar. “Eh, whatever.” He looked forward, noticing an abrupt turn in the trail’s direction. “It should be just past here, right?”
“Yep!” said Rob, running ahead. “Should just be a little past here…” Looking ahead, he turned back to Skylar. “Yeah! See, it’s right there!”
Upon reaching the point where Rob was, Skylar turned to follow his gaze. Sure enough, just to the right of the trail was a large, rough and jagged looking rock wall. “Heh… that’s pretty cool,” said Skylar, approaching it. “So the trail follows this wall for a while, then?”
“That’s right,” said Rob. “We just have to keep following it and… hmmm? What’s this?” He suddenly walked forward, bending over slightly. “Hey Skylar, check this out.”
“Hmmm?” said Skylar, walking over to where Rob was. “What is it?”
“Look at this part of the cliff here,” said Rob. “Look how smooth it is.” He looked up, examining the rest of the cliffside. “The rest of this cliff is really rough and jagged, but this part? Completely smooth. Why do you think that is?”
“I… don’t know,” said Skylar. As he examined the cliff, though, something caught his eye. “Whoa! Hey Rob, look at that!”
“What is it?” asked Rob, following Skylar’s gaze. Down at the very bottom of the cliffside, right in the middle of the smoothed-out area, was a small hole. “Huh… that’s really interesting,” said Rob, examining it. He stepped back, examining the face of the cliff. “Look - its shape matches the shape of the smoothed-out portion of the cliff exactly. Why do you think that is?”
“No idea,” said Skylar with a shrug. “It looked kinda like a mouse hole, though. I wonder if anything’s living in it?”
“Yeah, me too,” said Rob, bending down to look inside. “It’s too dark to see anything in it, though.” He got down on his knees, bending until he was eye-level with it. “Helllooooo!” he yelled into it. “Anything in there?”
Skylar chuckled, bending down alongside Rob. “You can come out if you’re in there!” He yelled, tapping just above the hole with his finger. “We won’t hurt you, we promise!” He laughed, standing back up. “Man, I don’t know what we’re doing,” he said as Rob stood up next to him. “It’s not like anything’s going to respond to-”
“Would you two KEEP IT DOWN?????” Both Rob and Skylar jumped, recoiling in shock. “I’m trying to sleep in here!”
Rob and Skylar looked at each other. “Um… did you hear that?” asked Rob.
“Um… yeah, I did,” said Skylar, looking back at the hole. “Did… did that come from that hole just now?”
“It sure sounded like it did,” said Rob. “But that’s obviously impossible.” He looked around. “It had to have come from somewhere else. Maybe from further down the trail, or-”
“Alright, what’s the big idea?” Rob and Skylar jumped again, their attention turned towards the hole. “All I want to do is take a little nap, but instead I’ve got these two gabbers talking up a storm and keeping me awake!” As the two of them stared at the hole, their eyes widened in shock as something suddenly emerged: a head. A tiny, miniature head with a long snout, covered in golden scales and topped with two long (at least proportionally) curved horns. The tiny creature continued to emerge, revealing a body about the length of a human hand, forelegs and hindlegs tipped with sharp claws, and a spiked tail whipping back and forth in annoyance. It spread its wings, which couldn’t have measured more than a few inches across, and looked up at the two humans. “You two want to explain why you’re insisting on being so loud?” it said angrily.
Rob and Skylar just stared for a moment. They looked at each other, then back at the creature. “You’re… a dragon,” Rob finally said, breaking the silence.
“Yeah, I am,” said the dragon. “What, you got a problem with that?” He chuckled, craning his neck to look back at himself. “Though I suppose I can’t blame you for being in awe of such majesty as mine! I’m sure I must be a sight to behold for such lesser beings as yourselves.”
Skylar blinked. “M…majesty?” he said. “Lesser beings?”
“Yes, of course!” said the dragon. “My majestic appearance has the two of you at a loss for words, I’d imagine!” Grinning, he tilted his head back, spreading his wings wide. “Yes, bask in the glory of the mighty Gigatarr the Grand, terror to all who stand to oppose him!” Flapping his wings, he lifted himself up into the air, rising until he was eye level with the two humans. “And right now, that includes you two gabbers, since you were rude enough to keep me awake for so long! But of course, if you kneel and beg for my mercy, I might just be willing to let you unharmed.”
Rob and Skylar blinked. Then they looked at each other, mouths curling into slight grins. Then they snickered. Finally, they both burst out laughing, almost doubling over completely. “Wha… HEY! EXCUSE ME!” the dragon snapped at them. “How DARE you laugh at me! Do you have any idea who it is you’re dealing with here?”
“Sorry, sorry” said Skylar in between chuckles. “It’s just… you’re so tiny!
“Yeah, and so adorable!” laughed Rob. “Especially when you’re trying to act all mighty and tough!”
“Yeah, that’s right!” said Skylar. “ I mean, just look at him! He’s so cute! Who could he possibly hurt?”
“Yeah!” said Rob. “I mean, doesn’t he look like you could just scoop him up and hug him?”
“He really does!” laughed Skylar. He stepped towards the dragon, holding his arms out. “Is it okay if I hold you for a bit? I’m sorry, I just really want to see what hugging a dragon would be like-”
“HUGGING me? Absolutely not!” The dragon snarled, darting away from Skylar’s outstretched arms. “You know, I’m starting to think that you two aren’t actually impressed by my amazing majesty! In fact, I’m starting to think that you two might actually think you’re BETTER than me, just because you’re bigger than I am! Is that right?”
“Um…” Skylar looked at Rob, then back at the Dragon. “I mean… we didn’t say that we were BETTER than you. We just found it kinda funny that you were talking yourself up so much when you’re so, you know…”
“Oh, and you think someone as small as me can’t be grand and majestic just because of his size?” The dragon’s wings were flapping rapidly now, his tail whipping back and forth in fury. “First you wake me up with your gabbering, then you patronize me, and now you’re saying that I can’t be majestic just because I’m not as big as you are? Well, I refuse to stand for this kind of treatment any longer! I think it’s time I gave you both a lesson in humility!”
“Humility?” Rob chuckled. “We’re going to get a lesson in humility from someone who just referred to himself as-” Before he could finish, a jet of flame suddenly erupted from the dragon’s mouth, blasting Rob right in the chest. Before Skylar could react, the dragon turned his head towards him, blasting Skylar in the chest as well. “Wha- hey!” yelled Rob, ducking away from the flames. “That was totally uncalled for!”
“Still insisting on disrespecting me, are you?” chuckled the dragon. “Well, I suppose you’ll just have to learn the hard way not to talk like that to someone like me! The changes should be starting at any moment now.”
“Changes?” said Rob, confused. “What changes? What are you talking abou-” Before he could finish, the flames from his chest suddenly erupted across his body, engulfing it completely. “Gah!” It took Rob a moment to notice that despite being surrounded by flames, he wasn’t in any pain at all - yet his body still felt strange, like the flames were filling it with some kind of unnatural energy. “Wha… what is this?”
“Rob, your face!” Rob’s head turned towards Skylar, who was pointing at his face in shock. His entire body was also aflame, yet he didn’t seem to notice. “There’s… there’s something on your face!”
“Huh?” Rob reached a hand up, brushing it against the cheek where Skylar was pointing. Something about that area… didn’t feel right. It felt rough and patchy, not really like skin at all, but closer to… something else that he couldn’t place. But once he looked up at Skylar, his eyes widened in shock. “S-Skylar?” he said, taking a step back. “Your face, it’s… it’s…”
“It’s what?” Skylar reached up to feel his face and frowned. It felt… longer? Not only that, the skin felt rougher and thicker, not really like skin at all but more like… scales? He looked over at Rob, seeing the white patchy bits of skin spread across the rest of his face… which looked like it was starting to protrude out into some kind of muzzle. In that instant, it clicked. “Scales!” he cried. “That’s what’s happening to us! We’re growing scales!”
“Wha… scales?” Rob’s hands flew up to his face, feeling it push out into what felt like some kind of snout as the patchy scaly skin continued to spread across it. Looking over at Skylar, he saw his face stretch out as well, forming into a reptilian muzzle as black scales spread across it. His hair was starting to fall out too, white scales spreading across his face as two long, straight horns emerged from the top of his head. “What the hell are you doing to us!” yelled Rob, turning back to the dragon.
“I already told you: giving you a lesson in humility,” said the dragon, grinning wickedly. “You two think you’re so much better than me just because you’re bigger? Well, we’ll see if you still feel that way once you’re done changing!”
As Skylar watched, Rob’s long hair began falling out as well, golden spikes growing down the length of his neck to replace it. He raised a hand to point it out - and suddenly noticed just how large his shirt looked on his arm. In fact, it looked like it was growing larger by the second, slowly swallowing up his hand into it. He looked up - and suddenly noticed how much larger everything else around him seemed, too. “Wait…” he said, his heart rapidly hammering in his chest. “Are… are we…”
Rob wasn’t paying attention, though. His attention was turned to his clothes, which were starting to feel looser and looser on him. His black button-down shirt was already starting to fall off, revealing a torso covered in white scales. Shaking his arm, he pulled it out of the top of his shirt, revealing that it too had white scales running down every inch of it. He looked down at his hand, fingernails having sharpened into wicked claws, and his eyes widened. “What the hell is happening to us?” he cried.
Skylar, meanwhile, had completely freed himself from his shirt and was now staring down at his own torso - most of his scales there were white, save for the golden diamond in the center of his chest. He raised an arm, which was completely covered in blue scales, before his gaze moved further down his body - right down to the blue tail that had emerged from his rear. Thick and scaly, it jutted out from just above his pants, which by this point had also completely fallen off his body. He lifted a leg, noticing the black scales making their way down towards his feet, and looked up at Rob. “We’re shrinking!” he cried, his body shaking with anticipation. “That’s what’s happening to us! We’re getting smaller!”
“What?” For the first time, Rob’s focus left his body as he turned to look around himself. Then his attention turned to his clothes, which had completely fallen off his body and were now pooling around his waist. He quickly stepped out of them, noticing that his legs were also now covered in white scales, his feet having completely shifted into reptilian paws. Once he was safely out, he looked behind him, barely even noticing the white scaled-tail emerging from his rear. The pile of clothes behind him was getting bigger and bigger, now having grown all the way up to his chest and still getting even taller. “Oh my god…” he said, turning towards Skylar. “We’re… we’re…”
“Look at us!” said Skylar. As he said it, the flames around them subsided, leaving them completely exposed. Climbing out the massive pile of clothes surrounding him, he got a good look at Rob - clearly no longer human, he looked more like some kind of wingless bipedal dragon covered head to toe in white scales. Looking down upon himself, Skylar could see that his form wasn’t much different. The only difference seemed to be the scale coloration: black on his legs and feet, blue on his arms and tail, and white on his torso - and of course, the yellow diamond right in the middle of his chest. “Whoa…” he said in amazement, looking at Rob. “Look at us!” He looked around, noticing just how big the world around them had gotten. “Look at how tiny we are!”
“Impressive, isn’t it?” laughed the dragon. He approached them, an evil grin stretched across his draconic muzzle. “After all, it’s only fair. You made fun of my size, so I thought I’d… even the playing field, so to speak.”
“Like hell it’s fair!” cried Rob, walking towards the dragon. “You’d better change us back right now, or…” He trailed off as the dragon got closer, taking a step back in fear. “Or…. o-or…”
“Not so tough now, are you?” chuckled the dragon. Once tiny, he now towered over the two former humans, looking down at them with glee. “I’d say this is a pretty good lesson in humility, eh? Two humans who think they’re better than everything else just because they’re bigger, reduced to two itty-bitty kobolds, ready to serve! I can hardly think of a more fitting punishment, can you?”
“Kobolds?” Skylar looked down at his body, then looked back at Rob’s. “Oh… I guess that makes sense, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah… wait, did you say serve?” Rob looked up at the dragon, clenching his fists in anger. “You think we’re going to serve you? After what you did to us?”
“Well, you don’t HAVE to serve me if you don’t want to,” said the dragon gleefully. “You could always just stay out here… hunting and fending for yourselves in these forms for the rest of your lives.” He turned back towards his cave. “Or you could live in my cave, worshiping me and serving me in exchange for my protection from anything that might mean you harm. Do it well enough, and I might even choose to change both of you back… eventually. But, if you’re rather stay out here-”
“No, wait!” Rob sighed, lowering his head in defeat. “Fine. We’ll serve you. As long as you promise to change us back!”
“But of course!” said the dragon. “As I said, do a good enough job and I’ll be more than happy to change both of you back! Of course, I’m not really sure WHEN that’s going to happen. Could be a year, two years, five, ten…” He turned back, noticing Rob’s horrified expression. “But hey, any amount of time with me is better than having to live by yourselves out here when you’re barely a couple inches tall, right? Now, why don’t you follow me inside? My scales have REALLY been aching lately, you know. Could use a good massage from a nice pair of able hands.”
As the dragon lumbered back into his cave, Rob and Skylar looked around at their surroundings. Everything was so much more enormous now - blades of grass now towered over them, and the tiniest pebbles on the dirt path looked more like large boulders to them. “Gah!” cried Rob, stumbling backwards as an airplane-sized squirrel bounded past them. He turned to Skylar. “So, um… now what do we do?”
Skylar shrugged. “Well, we don’t really have much of a choice, do we?” he said. “And hey, this isn’t so bad. I mean, look at us!” He looked down at himself, grinning. “Not only do we get to experience being a whole new species, but a whole new size as well? That’s pretty cool, isn’t it?”
Rob frowned. “I mean, I guess so,” he said. “Just not really in these specific circumstan-”
“Aw come on, I know you’re into this kind of thing just as much as I am!” said Skylar with a chuckle. “Besides, how many people can say that they’ve tended to an actual, real live dragon? Not many, I’d imagine.”
“You mean a dragon the size of a matchbox car?” grumbled Rob.
Skylar sighed. “Well, you’re perfectly welcome to stay out here if you’d like,” he said. “I, for one, would rather take full advantage of this opportunity!” With that, he turned and started heading towards the cave. After a moment of hesitation, Rob began following closely behind him, reluctantly ready to begin his new life as a servant to a dragon.
