Species: Unicorn
Homeland: Thulemir, in the Arctic Circle
Element: Fire (including high-intensity kinetic energies such as electrostatic and electromagnetic fields)
Origins
During the 12th Century, pagan resistors to Christianization emigrated from Northern Europe. Comprised of churls (free peasants) sailors, artisans, warriors, and others, these mostly equine settlers sailed into the Arctic Circle, to an island rumored to lie within its frozen mists called Thulemir.
Steeped in mystical energies, Thulemir was already home to strange elemental beings and spirits. Establishing friendly with these natives, the settlers formed communities with them through marriage and crossbreeding. Over generations, the settlers and Native Thulemireans became four distinct races: dragans, nøkk, fjærrygg, and enhjørning.
Appearance
Thulemirean enhjørning are typically between 168 and 175 centimeters and weigh 80 to 90 kilograms. They have a wide range of fur, hair and eye colors, with some marked by exceptionally radiant colors. They are immediately recognizable by their unique horns and their unguligrade faun legs, common to all Thulemirean equine sapiens.
It should always be noted that enhjørning appear to outsiders and non-mystical beings as average equine sapiens due to a lack of mystical perception. While all Thulemireans possess this trait to varying degrees, an enhjørning's true self is only visible to other mystical beings, those trained in mystic arts, or the pure of heart.
Biology
Thulemirean equine sapiens are said to have "magic in their bones." Enhjørning are the most adept magic s, likely because of the horn protruding from their skull, acting as a mystical antennae. Enhjørning are also said to have "fire in their blood and lightning in their marrow," suggesting they are especially attuned to electrostatic, thermal, and electromagnetic energies in both a physical and metaphysical sense. They are abnormally warm to the touch, resilient against normal cold and water. Though s say the are adversely affected by powerful water and ice magic. They also possess a heightened sixth sense that can detect other mystical beings at a greater distance than many other mystics.
Culture
Enhjørning are the most mystically gifted beings on Thulemir. Descended from predominantly equine Scandinavians and fire spirits, enhjørning are clever and resourceful. Often becoming mages and scholars, they venerate Odin as their patron deity. Studious and intelligent, they are among the most literate and educated residents of Thulemir, frequently becoming teachers, scribes, and lawspeakers.
Typically, they cluster in families and clans close to areas marked by regular geothermal activity. Like all Thulemireans, they organize themselves into medieval-style communes with decentralized authority. While they often form tightly knit social groups close to their places of birth, most fraternize with and travel through the communities of Thulemir, establishing themselves in their chosen profession through guilds and apprenticeships.
Martial skill
Typically shorter than dragans and nøkk, enhjørning are not as short as the willowy and agile fjærrygg. Because of their smaller size, they typically emphasize their mystical abilities for ranged over hand-to-hand combat. For the sake of common defense, enhjørning train alongside other Thulemireans to augment their combat skills. Enhjørning blacksmiths customarily enchant the weapons they forge to inflict or resist various mystical effects, which are provided to the most skilled Thulemirean warriors.
Mystical skill
While generally described as "fire elementals," enhjørning are capable of manipulating intensive kinetic energy, thus possessing powers of electrokinesis and electromagnetism. Enhjørning can combine their elemental powers to regulate the geothermal energies of Thulemir so that the island experiences cyclical seasons despite the intense cold of the Arctic Circle, as well as create artificial sunlight. They are highly resilient against fire and electricity, able to withstand temperatures and voltages that would maim or kill most mortals. They are also sensitive to electromagnetic fields, possessing an innate sense of direction which they use to navigate without need of a com.
Special notes
Despite being an enhjørning, Aušrinė Haakonsdotter is physically larger and heavier than most of her kind because she is half dragan on her father's side. While still not as tall as most dragan, she is head and shoulders above most enhjørning. Aušrinė's size, musculature, and physique are also unique despite her parentage. On average, mystical traits correspond to physical traits and sexual characteristics. Thus, Aušrinė was expected to more physically resemble her enhjørning mother. The fact she, like her younger brother Parsifal, exhibited a blend of her parents' characteristics was read as a sign of unique gifts.
