From East Finland trip -
Clarification on the marking on the Border Rock, the official border of 1595 between Sweden controller East Finland and West Russian Empire
"The Ohtaansalmi Boudary Stone
The treaty of Teusina ended 25 year of war between Sweden-Finland and Russia. It was signed on May 18, 1595 in the village of Teusina in Ignris
The border between the realms for Sweden-Finland and Russia had been unclear and a continuous source of disagreement ever since the Treaty of Nöteborg (1323). Border clashes were frequent, and raids were carries out by both sides. Due to the continuous treat of violence, (only?) few people were willing to settle close to the border. Treaty of Teusina defined the eastern border of the province of Savo
According to the Treaty of Teusina, Sweden was to relingquish control of Ingria and province of Kexholm to Russia, but before that the boundary was to be surveyed. Tha boundaries were to be marked according to what they had been in ancient times. If they were unclear, treaty stipulated that documents and old inhabitants of the border zone were to be consulted. The instructions of the Swedish treaty delegation specifically emphasized that actual land use had precedence over old documentation. From the point of view of Sweden-Finland, the treaty was considered quite favourable as Russia acknowledged the Swedish expansion eastward and northward to coast of the Arctic Ocean
On October 19, 1595 a document was signed that defined the boundary line between Varpavuori (Varpa Mountain) and Pisamäki (Pisa Hill). Besides the two terminals, other important boundatary points were Somertaipale and Ohtaansalmi (Strait of Ohtaa), which were marked with particular care. The inscription on the rock face consiste of the year 1595, three crowns of Swedish Coat of Arms, and below these the initials of the Swedish Boundary delegates: CF - Claus Hermansson Flemming, AT - Arvid Henrikson Horn, GF - Gödik Fincke, and IH - Georg Henriksson Horn. The Russian signed themselves with the cross at the bottom.
The border agreed upon in the Treaty of Teusina was in effect for 22 years. In 1617 the treaty of Stolbova moved the border of Sweden-Finland to the east of Savo Provice"
