We apologise for the delay to this . This was due to leaves on the line/the wrong kind of snow/unforseen acts of dog/delete as applicable.
Anyway, Alasdair Geddes is almost never seen without a purple amethyst amulet around his neck - it's one of the last reminders he has of his late mother Morag, and thus he treasures it dearly. Quite apart from the sentimental value it holds for Alasdair, it's also supposed to have mystical properties of the most powerful character - although these have not been showcased as of yet in the canon of the comics.
An amulet of near-identical appearance and power plays a crucial role in The Secret of NIMH, which I only saw for the first time earlier this year. Indeed, there being such an amulet was one of the few aspects I was aware of going into it - mainly because I've been asked once or twice whether Alasdair's amulet was in any way inspired by Mrs Brisby's Stone (for the record, it wasn't - not directly, anyway). Without giving too much away, the unleashing of the Stone's true power is one of the few film moments that's honest-to-god given me chills. If you've seen it before, you'll know what scene I mean. If you haven't, get thee to your nearest repository of home media, pick this damn movie up and experience it for yourself!
