[Christmas 2024 Special]
It was more than a week away from Christmas and it was snowing heavily outside, far too bad of a weather to step out to play in the snow. Cassie and Lucas sulked as they stared through the window at the wintry night landscape, waiting for their parents to return from the grocery store a few minutes’ drive away. They had already changed into their set of night wear, long sleeved cotton shirts with pajama pants, but they wanted to be tucked into bed.
However, there was nothing but the howling winds outside and the humming of their living room radiator, no sign of their parents returning anytime soon. Cassie stared at the stuffed wolf in her hands, frowning slightly as she missed her mother’s voice when she would tell stories to let them sleep better. “D-do you think they forgot to tuck us into bed? Where do you think they are?” She questioned her brother, who was sitting upside down on the couch and already haunted by boredom. Cassie gave her plush wolf a tight embrace while pacing, humming to keep herself entertained and warm, “Mmm…”
“Don’t worry, they’ll be back,” Lucas responded, flipping himself back over and scratching his head. “I think…”
Suddenly, their fireplace began rumbling and two present boxes hurtled through the air and landed beside them, each with a yellow paper tag on a string. They shifted their gaze to the presents that mysteriously turned up beside them, slightly curious about where they came from and what they might contain. Cassie picked up the box with her name and Lucas soon followed suit, both unwrapping their early Christmas gifts. The girl pulled out a wolf onesie with a light-gray belly and a zipper running along it, and at the tailbone area of the outfit was a fluffy feather duster-like tail. Her brother’s gift was a ferret onesie of three shades of brown. It had a big stuffed tail and a zipper similarly on the front of the outfit.
The children were ecstatic, immediately wearing the outfits over their pajamas and zipping themselves into the warm, fleecy onesies. As soon as they lifted the onesies’ hoods over their heads, the outfits began to tighten on their body, and in seconds, the zippers vanished. While Lucas was struggling to remove the hood and tear his ferret onesie off, Cassie was calm and overjoyed when the fuzzy wolf tail of her onesie wagged to her delight. To her, it was like the onesie was giving a warm full body hug. Through the hoods of their onesies, two voices cooed in unison, “Don’t worry or struggle. We’re here for snuggles. We're not here to harm you in any way, just here to keep you warm and the cold away!”
They began a test run in their new and comfy animal pajamas, their tails trailing behind and whipping chaotically with every energetic step they took. Cassie raised her wolf plushie in front of her, howling as she chased Lucas around the house like a prey. The sewn expressions of the onesie hoods changed according to the children’s mood. Cassie’s onesie expressed ferocity while Lucas’ displayed fear. All four of them enjoying the little zooms up and down the stairs, laughing and giggling as they played. After a few circles around their home, the two children were drained and warm, and yet, they did not break a sweat at all. Typically, their little chasing games would leave them soaked in sweat, but they were both pleasantly surprised that they need not clean up after.
Returning to the couch of the living room, both of them flopped onto the seats and huffed for air. While the two were calming down from their game of chase, Cassie gave the fuzzy wolf ears on her head a little rub, asking, “Where are you from? Are you made from magic?” The tail of her wolf onesie began to swish wildly behind her before the animated wolf onesie explained to the two, “We’re your Christmas gifts, Casey and Lucas. But it seems we’ve arrived earlier than expected.” The ferret onesie wiggled a little and added, “And, we are magic, the wondrous magic of Christmas! Speaking of magic, I’ve got one more thing for you Lucas!”
A small, fur-covered ferret plushie materialized out of thin air. It fell gently into Lucas’ hands, feeling both warm and soft to the touch. He lifted it to his cheeks and nuzzled its fuzzy plush body contentedly, instantly adoring it because it was his favorite animal, but he was too shy to ask his parents to get him the stuffed animal. His onesie’s tail, too, wagged in agreement. For Cassie’s stuffed wolf, it became fluffier and its face changed to display a more playful expression. The two played with their stuffed animals, enjoying another few more minutes of playtime before their drowsiness set in, causing them to yawn.
“Alright. Time for you two little ones to sleep! Let’s go to your bedroom!” The wolf onesie declared.
Both children trudged toward their shared bedroom, each being tucked in by the onesies themselves. The plushies, however, moved on their own accord and wiggled out from Lucas and Cassie’s arms. They sat on the lip of the blanket and started to narrate a short Christmas story together, their stitched mouths moving with every word they spoke. The onesies’ ears twitched every few seconds, listening attentively together with the children. Slowly but surely, the children were soothed and their eyelids were becoming heavier with every ticking second. This was exactly what they wanted for the night.
When the story concluded, the plushies squirmed their way under the blankets back into their arms. Like their onesies, the plushies hugged both Lucas and Cassie’s cheeks with their fuzzy fabric forepaws, providing warmth to them as they drifted off into the dreams of childlike fantasies with a smile from ear to ear.
Only then did the front door unlock and gently open to their parents finally returning from the snow storm to check on them. They were mystified when they saw the two already wearing their Christmas gifts, but was reassured by their tranquil slumber, snuggled up with their plushies under the blankets and hugged by their warm onesies.
