Kuro and Shiro have decided to participate in the ritual of bonding, a ceremony that originated from several different tribes that followed the teachings of the dragon gods. This included the blue dragon tribe, which Kuro and Shiro once belonged to before it was eradicated by the black dragon tribe. The ritual is performed by two partners when they desire for their romantic relationship to be approved by the dragon gods themselves. Once the ceremony has been completed, if the sound of thunder can be heard in the distance, then the relationship has been recognized as legitimate and therefore, will be significantly stronger. However, if there is no thundering to be heard, the dragon gods do not consider the romance genuine and the doctrine states that the couple should consider parting ways. Normally, only the two lovers are present for the ritual, as the entire ceremony is very personal. Despite that, some tribes preferred a witness be present, to document whether approval was received or not. In the current generation, the ceremony has spread far and wide to other tribes and villages and is especially popular amongst raccoons, rodents and avians. Some participants will allow friends and family to attend; even permitting them to take part during specific portions of the rite. Countless species view the ritual more as a celebration and legitimization of a ionate companionship. Obtaining the blessing of the dragon gods is considered to be the highest honor for those belonging to the various dragon tribes though. For Kuro in particular, this was something he had been pressured about since he was just a small dragonet. The importance of finding a significant other and taking part in the ritual was ingrained into every dragon of his tribe at a very young age.
The beginning of the ritual involves each partner placing a flower over the heart of the other, with a brief explanation about what the flower represents. Shiro began by providing Kuro with a white flower, which symbolizes pure and genuine love, in addition to eternal loyalty. Kuro followed, by bestowing Shiro with a blue flower, which signifies that his love for the griffin is infinite and sincere.
The second part of the ceremony requires a retelling from each participant, about the events that took place which resulted in them falling in love.
The Promise is an expanded version of Shiro's retelling of the events that led to him falling in love with Kuro.
