If you saw Eko in nowadays you'd never know just what he's done/gotten up to. But being snatched from the future and brought to the past and having to fight for your freedom does wonder to mellow you out and appreciate the small things.
But don't think he can't 'slide into his old ways' when needed. He's willing to do what is needed to avoid a bad future. Looks like he was forced to do just that and take action to 'fix' the problem. Sucks to be whom ever was his target.
Wonder whom was the target, or what 'bad outcome' he was trying avoid.

I know right! I saw the base and though 'that looks like a cyber punk noir style future back ground' and i just couldn't get eko out of my head with it. I even picked out a sword to give Eko cus i liked the background so much and the lighting.
