Thursday Prompt: When will a joke slide?

So, this week's 
Thursday_Prompt was "When will a joke slide", along with a 365-word restriction.
I decided to go full feghoot, at least in part because a blog I follow has been posting Pearls Before Swine strips where he tends to do that. (A feghoot basically being a very short story ending on a really bad joke based on a well-known phrase. Science Fiction writer Isaac Asimov absolutely loved feghoots.)
I regret nothing!

and by the by, I had a cousin who, in the 60's & 70's had an underground rock group called Pearls Before Swine... as I recall, he later became a lawyer...

The blogger I mentioned above runs into this sometimes: he loves extended puns like this, and often posts the Pearls Before Swine strips using them; but he's originally from Sri Lanka and the occasional phrase goes right past him because he didn't grow up with idiomatic English.
