Started a job as a Spanish/English Conversation assistant today and I am very excited! though it makes it hard to hammer out time for misc doodles between the job and the comic but here is a little dude!
Trying my best to get the people in the next comic well sorted. Trying to avoid just explaining everything about them as that's what the next comic will be about! But was inspired after reading and practicing a lot of Western Australian anthropology and archaeology! Doodled this guy. As finally someone had a flaked based stone spear that wasn't a levallois point!
These sorts of spears are simply a sharpened, polished wooden spear adorned with stone flakes along one or both sides. While the Australian examples were all thrown by hand or by a variety of different atlatl devices (there are at least 6) this one is gonna be thrown with a throwing strap. The Drekir, Ormer, and Mavõtur people of Logáu are broadly descendant from the sivilão and so come from a culture that is more familiar with javelin throwing as a martial tradition. So many of the early survivors simply repurposed their amentum-javelin throwing technology from warfare to hunting early on and that technology stuck for many drekir peoples.
The Americas are oft dominated by atlatl based technologies whereas Logáu drekir broadly embraced amentum based spear projectile technologies. Of course you can find amentums in the Americas and atlatls in Logáu, but for the drekir of Logáu, the amentum is what they often know and what often works!
In this case the spears are more to compliment the use of bolas to hunt animals such as Paígir. Large (though not giant) grazing arachnids that wander the deserts feeding on cacti. You need a heavy hard projectile to get past that carapace and cut the heart beneath and for them, this method works! The spear is specifically built for throwing as of course you don't want to get close to a big thrashing spider if you can help it.
Again I know I am kinda "vagueposting" about these guys as i have for the past few months, trying to make sure that since the next comic is gonna take place in a completely unworldbuilt part of the world ive been doing my best to put work in. This guys boot isn't the whole story though! So believe me hopefully some of the stuff in the coming story will excite you folks!
Be Well!
