Time always ed quickly whenever they talked with each other. It was now well past midnight, but it felt like only an hour had ed since Lee entered the Hyuga compound, as if the sun were still setting far away in the horizon to leave room in the wide sky for the smaller stars.
And he had only realized when Neji started to yawn, doing the best that he could do to keep his eyes open. Tiredness was invading him and as always, the brunet refused to let it win, even though most of his body was covered with the blanket of his futon and he acted as if nothing was happening.
Lee giggled at him, covering himself too before hearing a complaint from his friend.
"What's so funny?" Neji wondered with a frown, energy restored just enough for him to talk for a while.
"We can keep talking in the morning, rival! We will have a lot of time," the taijutsu master answered, purposefully avoiding the question. "Do not force yourself to stay awake. It is not good for your health!"
The Hyuga looked at a side, almost as if he was considering it. He mumbled a soft 'good night' before fully covering himself with his blanket, although that didn't last for long.
It was unusual for Neji to fall asleep first– always vigilant with his Byakugan, he had gotten used to watching over his friends to prevent anyone from harming them. But that wasn't the strangest thing to happen that night–
Between snores and soft breaths, he had unconsciously moved closer to Lee and laid on his futon, his arms sloppily wrapping themselves on him as if his life depended on that. That made the taijutsu master freeze with confusion in his heart, not knowing what to do, or if he had to move away.
That wasn't a necessity for him; Lee actually liked cuddling with his teammates, his closest friends, but that was the first time that he hadn't been the one to hug the Hyuga first. He felt happy and worried at the same time, enjoying the affection but wondering what might have prompted it– even if things with his uncle had calmed down slightly after the Chunin exams, Neji was still wary of him and for good reasons. Had something happened between him and Hiashi? That wouldn't be a surprise…
Trying to not bother his rival too much, Lee placed his own hands on top of his– without his bandages, he could enjoy how soft Neji's skin was, and how cold his fingers were even if half of his body was hidden under a thick blanket. He couldn't help it but let out a smile, relaxing on Neji's arms in complete silence while his friend simply rested his head on his back.
