At least Lyall and Jeremy will be keeping that incident a secret. But I must ask, will you be doing more in this setting? Maybe even taking commissions for specific animals? I'd gladly pay to see someone become a bassarisk.

I really feel bad for Rylie. They've become really close as they relate more, but Lyall changed so fast toward the end while she changed relatively little. It seems she had no time to prepare. My bet is she'll be the next to change

Rereading this, the hawk and Lyall, if they were ever really separate, seem to have integrated during the dream. Although if that's the case, he was still staring back at himself as the hawk, right? If they're unified now, who is that? Whatever the case, it makes sense that he keeps insisting he's still in control

One follow up comment/critique now that I have had the time to read it a second time (yes I am reading all these more than once )

There's an anatomical error in the foot transformation sequence where you describe the hallux-toe (the large backwards pointing one) as emerging from the heel. This is not very realistic. It would be more anatomically consistent for the human big toe to migrate round to point backwards, forming the large raptor hallux-toe. The heel should start to lift up off the ground entirely as the ankle shifts upwards towards becoming that characteristic "reverse knee" that birds appear to have. It's not actually a reversed knee, it's the ankle. Birds do have knees and they angle the normal way, but owing to the relatively short upper thigh, the knee is usually completely hidden by feathers.

So after Lyall's change is over, it would feel like constantly walking on tip-toe everywhere. Except the big toe is now pointing backward to provide stability.

12 - upper leg, i.e. thigh
7 - knee
10 - lower leg, i.e. shins
8 - called the "tarsometatarsus", it's basically a fusion of all the bones in the bridge of the foot
(in between 8 and 10 is the ankle, it's unlabelled for some reason)

I hope that makes sense? I know you've been pretty careful with the anatomical realism so far in this series so I felt I had to point it out.

Finally, my favorite part of bird transformations arrived! I've been looking forward to him getting his lovely talons. I was just hoping that we would get to see him try to use them as his replacement hands for a bit.

Part of me keeps hoping for the stereotypical good ending to this story, where a cure is miraculously found at the last minute or something like that. At the same time, I'm excited to see what happens to him when the transformation completes. I'm also sad that this wonderful story will be coming to an end soon. I've been looking forward to reading the next chapter each week. You've got an amazing world built here and I'm looking forward to seeing what else might come out of it.

This has been going on for so long now, I'm not sure what I'm going to read in my spare time when it's over. but I suppose, just like Lyall, not point in delaying the inevitable.
