Bucky complained to me that, while I have a few drawings of him in his football referee’s uniform, I failed to commission any art of him as a baseball umpire. He actually began his officiating career by calling balls and strikes for summer baseball. That oversight has been officially rectified.
The game is about to start. Although it doesn’t appear that he is doing much, Bucky is busy observing the pitcher’s warm-up, watching his motion, and counting pitches. After the maximum number have been thrown, the umpire will take his place behind the catcher, pull on his mask, and call out the words that the fans have been waiting for: “Play ball!”

NatashaKot completed THIS DRAWING for me, I knew it was only a matter of time before we worked together again.
Please give Natalie some well-deserved love. Check out her gallery and have a peek at the terrific art that you’ll find there. There are even a few more that are baseball themed.

I’m glad you can now claim one as well.
Now PLAY BALL!! Ooops, sorry, Bucky -- you get to say that ^__^
It's true. Brand new game balls are licked, rolled in dirt, then rubbed down before they are put into play.
I'm guessing the rolled in dirt part is probably to "equalise" the balls to a standard roughness, so no ball has an advantage over the other?

I coached my youngest son from T-ball through age 11. After that, the kids were more skilled than I ever was.

A fellow I officiated football with had a son who was really good at baseball. After his second year of college, he hung up his cleats.
