Kanika-Ra is an avia-ra soldier, born and raised. Her faith and dedication were unshakeable. She trained hard and exalted the sun every morning.
So where was the sun the day her company was wiped out?
In a surprise attack, Kanika's entire company was slaughtered to a man, but somehow, somewhere, she found the strength to turn the enemy's assault against them, to wipe the enemy forces out so utterly that there would be no one left to give creedence to the deed. Was the sun shining on her that day? If so then why did her company have to die?
Her faith shaken, she resigned, leaving on a mission of self discovery. She would put her military talents to use as a bounty hunter, tracking wanted souls to the far ends of the galaxy if need be. Nothing could stop her from completing her mission, not overwhelming odds, not hazardous environments, and not a clever criminal mind.
She was pursuing a lead when her ship was crippled too close to a sun-blasted asteroid. The ship didn't survive being dragged into the planetoid's atmosphere, and what did survive she had to sell for credits. Now she's working as a glorified spaceport guard while she gathers enough funds to buy a new ship and get off this rock.

So Kanika is a blatant Samus knock-off. As soon as I saw that there was a race of religious bird people and a new fighter archetype called Space Marine that gives you a customizable suit of power armor, and I knew what I needed to do.
Kanika's name poorly translates to "Black Sun", which is hinting at the possibility of her faith being shattered and her becoming a heretic, but I'm not sure which direction I'll go with her. She was clearly conflicted because her company was wiped out, but she was somehow given the strength to one-man an entire military squad.
