Angels are beings composed of enormous contradictions, and among their kind, Reese Tilson is no exception. As an angel, Reese is an extradimensional creature who operates outside the linear flow of time as we perceive it, yet the grey fox lived a relatively ordinary life as a mortal. Like every other angel residing above this linear flow who’ve likely lived since the dawn of creation, Reese has no real definitive age, but his mortal life came to a sudden and tragic end at the set age of nineteen. Although the fox is hardly one to reveal much of his former life or many attributes inherent to integral angelic duties, that doesn’t mean he’s reserved or unfriendly. While only so much can be divulged about the tasks he must fulfill, Reese will tell you that his story, like most, began where he was born.
In 1975, Reese Tilson was born in Savannah, Georgia, where the grey fox spent those early, formative years as the youngest boy of five children. However, when Reese was eight, the Tilson family uprooted their lives and moved to Santa Monica, California, when Reese’s father employer relocated. As a teenager, the young man surrendered to the overwhelming gravitational pull of Los Angeles as it eventually drew him deeper into the SoCal hardcore scene where bands like Bad Religion and Dead Kennedys profoundly shaped his morals and influenced his idealism. Completely capitulating to this attraction at eighteen, he enrolled at UCLA where he hoped to study social welfare and one day make a positive impact on the world at large. Such dreams, unfortunately, culminated in 1994 when Reese Tilson selflessly gave his life in order to protect his friends from an emerging supernatural threat that fateful Halloween night.
Thankfully, all was not lost, and Reese’s courageous sacrifice ultimately rescued those he tried to protect from certain death. If not for his death, ironically, Reese may have been unable to initiate the sort of change he once sought to create in life to such a monumental degree. As an angel, Reese’s desire to become a social worker was achieved in ways a mortal man could scarcely envision. Not only did his role as heavenly herald allow the grey fox to affect positive change, but through his work as an emissary, Reese was able to touch the lives of those no single soul could ever influence in life. One such soul was that of Tyson Bishop, a raccoon kit from Ames, Iowa, he was tasked to shield and reassure as guardian from on high.
Tyson’s life proved to be a fulcrum upon which the lever of many lives and decisive events pivoted resolutely. Sparking this catalyst were two demons who hunted Tyson and his friend Daeja into the forest outside Fraser, Iowa, a scant few days after the boy’s eighth birthday. The grey fox successfully repelled one, but the other, an ermine named Trace, shockingly suffered memory loss and shouldered the role of protector in lieu of Reese’s more indirect presence after the stoat won over the kit’s favor. While Reese was understandably displeased by this turn of events, Trace’s sincere desire to defend the boy from harm encouraged the grey fox to see the ermine more like an ally and less like an invader. In time, these two unlikely partners formed an effective alliance intended to keep a watchful eye on Tyson while he journeys in search of his long-lost friend, Daeja LaBrie, who all but disappeared from this world. As always, I want to give my thanks to
