Wow, two prompts in a row? I know, shocking! This is another submission for the weekly prompt for
Thursday_Prompt, the word this week being source. Unfortunately couldn't come up with a catchy title this time, but that's okay. Hopefully everyone who reads this enjoys it! Thank you for taking the time to read it and is always appreciated!
“Ugh! Does he have to make so much noise?” Maddie asked, covering her ears with her paws in an attempt to block out the noise coming through the walls of her apartment.
It was late at night and the border collie was trying to get some studying done with her roommate Layla, a minx, for an important test they had the next day. Both of them had B’s in the class, but if they did well on this test they could raise it to an A, which would improve their overall GPA. Unfortunately for them, their neighbor Randy decided that now would be a great time to watch TV at full volume.
Layla was clutching their textbook in her paws, but the noise was causing her to grip it so tight that her claws were at risk of piercing the cover. She set it down and shook her head. “I thought this apartment was supposed to have soundproof walls! In what way is this soundproof?" She flopped down on her bed, sending bits of loose fur into the air.
Maddie sighed. “Maybe we should pack up and head to the library or somewhere else to study.”
But Layla shook her head. “We can’t ? The library is closed and it’s too cold to do any sort of studying outside. Unless you want us to freeze our tails off enough to call in sick and miss the exam tomorrow.”
The two looked at each other, unsure what their next move should be.
“Well, maybe if one of us tried talking to him, he'll turn the volume down,” Maddie suggested, eyeing the wall the sound was coming from.
"Going right to the source of the problem, I like the way you think." Layla agreed and started to get off of her bed.
However, Maddie grabbed her paw before she could get any further. "Hold up. I don't think you should be the one to talk to them."
Shock ed on Layla's face as she took in her roommate's words. "What do you mean you don't want me to talk to them?"
Maddie crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. "You know exactly what I mean. Every time you go and talk to one of our neighbors, they end up complaining to the manager."
"So? They can complain all they want, but I have legitimate reasons for talking to them."
"Yeah, it's not what you talk to them about, but the way you do it that gets us the complaints."
Layla narrowed her gaze. "If you're gonna say something, just say it!"
With a sigh, Maddie knew this wouldn't end well. "It's the fact that you feel a need to confront furs and get in their business. Your first tactic is to act angry towards them. You never think to just ask them nicely."
The accusation floored Layla, and she shook Maddie's grip loose in anger. "What? That's absurd! I have not been that bad when talking to other furs about stuff like this!"
Maddie shook her head and held a paw up "Let's see...you chewed out Aaron for permeating the complex with the smell of garlic. You chewed out May for leaving her garbage out earlier than everyone else. Oh, and we can't forget the infamous time you chewed Douglas out for waking you that one time in the middle of the night."
"Okay, to be fair, he was making a lot of noise and it was one in the morning. No way was I going to let him get away with that!"
Maddie sighed. "Yeah, and I get that, but you also have to understand that others are not going to be happy with you if you keep blasting their ears off. You need to learn some self-restraint and calmly tell them these things"
Sighing herself, Layla paced a bit before leaning against the wall and crossing her arms. “Alright, well then, tell you what. Tell me how you would handle things and I'll try my best to do it your way."
Maddie had to think about that for a minute, weighing the pros and cons. “Sure, I'll agree to that. So, you need to keep your voice calm and peaceful and you need to ask in the nicest way possible for them to stop. Do the opposite of what you've been doing. It’s that simple.”
All of this earned her an eye roll from Layla. “Alright. Fine. I'll do my best
Maddie nodded. “Yes, it does. You can do it, I’m sure. It’s not hard, and you’ll feel better about the situation afterward.”
Layla nodded and then opened the door and headed out towards their neighbor’s apartment. Maddie listened for yelling or angry words being exchanged, but she didn’t hear any. After a minute or so, she was surprised to find Layla opening their apartment door and the sound of Randy's TV being turned down. It seemed like Layla had listened to what she’d said.
Smiling, Maddie watched Layla plop back down on her bed. “Well look at you. I didn’t hear any yelling, so I assume you took my advice and that it went well.”
Layla nodded her head. “That I did, and you were right. It was so much better than just chewing his head off. I’m gonna do that more often now.”
Maddie was glad to hear this, but there was still something she was curious about. “You know if you don’t mind me asking, what did you say to Randy to get him to turn his TV down?”
A small smile crossed Layla’s face as she recalled what she'd said. “Oh, well, I told him in the kindest way possible that if he didn’t turn his TV down, I was going to go in there, find his remote control, and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine. And it worked! As you can hear-or I guess, not hear-the TV is off, so now we can get our studying done in peace." Layla then grabbed the textbook she'd left on the bed and opened it to where she'd left off before.
Maddie felt her smile turn to a frown. That was not at all what she meant for Layla to do. She was about to say something but then saw the proud look on Layla’s face and decided to leave it for the night. It was late and they needed to study. If Randy was gonna complain to the building manager, then they'd deal with it tomorrow. So with a small sigh that she hoped Layla wouldn’t hear, she picked up her textbook and the two went back to preparing for their important test the next day.
